Drinking Cranberry juice can prevent tooth decay

Cranberry juice may protect against cavities by preventing bacteria from clinging to teeth.

Drinking the juice is already known to help prevent and treat bladder problems, by stopping bacteria sticking to the bladder wall.

Now these anti-bacterial properties are being tested in dental care.

Our mouths are full of bacteria, which feed off the sugars in food. They then excrete acids that cause dental decay.

Laboratory studies have shown that cranberry juice acts like Teflon, preventing the bacteria sticking to teeth.

The American researchers also found compounds in the juice stopped bacteria building up and forming plaque, which is a cause of gum disease.

They are now planning to isolate the compounds that provide the protection. It’s hoped they could then be added to toothpaste or mouthwash directly.

Cranberry Agricultural Emergency Declaration

Coos County Commissioners have asked the Governor to declare an agricultural emergency after late heavy rains affected crops in the county.  Commissioner Kevin Stufflebean say the Farmers Bureau made the request saying cranberry harvests are anticipated to be 100-thousand pounds less than the annual average and ranchers have faced an economic burden having to purchase more hay and feed for cattle since grazing fields were underwater longer this year.  Heavy rains continued into June and early July.  If approved by the governor, the request would be made to the federal government.  Financial aid would then be available to Coos County Farmers and Ranchers.  The request to the governor’s office was made yesterday after commissioners approved the emergency declaration at their regular meeting.
